Quick Fixes For Common Computer Problems

Anybody who has been associated with computers long enough is not alien to different types of computer problems. These problems may occur at any time and may throw you behind schedule in a big way. Although there are a few errors that may require the help of an expert, there are quite a few computer fixes that you can easily do on your own and save a lot of your hard earned money.

Let us have a look at a couple of such issues and how you can easily deal with them.

Uninstalling Unwanted Software

With so many programs on your computer, it is quite likely that you have some that you installed by mistake and want to get rid of. Additionally, it is recommended that you regularly check your system for unwanted software and remove them. This not only helps you free up a lot of disk space, but also enables you to speed up your computer. There are many different ways in which you can remove software from your computer. Let us a have a look at a few of them.

One of the most commonly used methods to uninstall software is to use the Add or Remove Program utility that comes with your Windows operating system. You may launch this utility from the Control Panel or by running the appwiz.cpl command. In the Currently installed programs list of the Add or Remove Programs window, scroll down and select the program you want to remove and then select the Remove or the Change/Remove button—whichever is available—to launch the uninstallation window and proceed with the removal process.

There some software tools that you add-on to other applications. For instance, you may add-on Yahoo toolbar to your Internet Explorer or Firefox Mozilla web browser. The option to remove these add-ons is usually available on their toolbar. For instance, to remove Yahoo toolbar from Firefox, you may select the Uninstall command from the Pencil menu that is displayed by clicking the Pencil icon on the Yahoo toolbar.

There are several software manufacturers that provide removal tools on their Web sites. So downloading these removal tools is also a good way of ensuring complete software removal.

Lastly, you may use a good third-party program uninstaller to completely remove software that you are unable to get rid of using the above methods. This includes software with corrupt uninstall information, buggy software, and impossible to remove spyware programs.

Dealing with CRC Errors

If you frequently download data from the Internet or share software and files using external media, you must be already acquainted with CRC errors. A CRC error occurs when the data you are trying to open is damaged.

CRC or Cyclic Redundancy Check is basically a test used to ensure that data received is same as the data sent. This is done by adding a CRC value to each data block that is transmitted. These CRC values are then checked at the destination to ensure that the CRC value of data received is same as the CRC value of data sent from the source.

CRC errors usually occur when:

  • Data gets damaged during transmission.
  • Problems with the Internet connection or external media with which the data is shared.
  • Error in the data itself.
  • Problem with the device that is used to open the file.

So, depending on how and where you receive your data, you may troubleshoot CRC errors by looking for these causes and resolve the issue that generated the error.

  1. There is so much adware and malware on the internet that I research the actual filenames of each one to uninstall them. But then I use simple Search and Destroy and it does the job. But I guess the way you indicated here will do the trick. Thanks.

  2. I work as an IT technician and the amount of time I spend uninstalling things that the clients have installed either unwittingly such as toolbars and other things is enormous. I will direct a few people here to let them help themselves and save myself some time for the more important jobs.
