How to clean Scratched CDs DVDs with Toothpaste

Last week i am installing windows XP from my XP cd. But in the half way, I got error "Cannot copy ps.dll. Make sure the Cd is in the drive." I try again and again but i am not able to install my xp. I took my XP cd out if CD drive and there are some scratches on it. Have you ever come acrooss a situation like this.Well, If you've ever owned a CD or DVD, you've certainly had to deal with scratched up, unreadable media. But now you need not to worry about it. The solution to this problem is really simple. In this post i am going to tell you about using toothpaste to clean scratched cds. Lets see step by step this cool trick which i used to clean scratches from my Scratched CDs or DVDs.

Just follow these steps to remove scrataches from your old CDs or DVDs:
  • First clean the CD with lint free cloth and remove all the dust from CD.
  • Now take toothpase, yes you heard right toothpaste, and apply small amount of toothpaste on a clean lint free cloth. You can use eyeglass cleaning cloth.
  • Now very gently rub the cloth on the scratches of cd. Make sure to rub this toothpaste cloth on all scratches of Cd. Make sure not to put much pressure on CD.
  • Now remove all the toothpaste from CD and make sure there should be no sign of toothpaste on CD.
  • Now using a clean cloth, clean the disc again.
Test the Cd and it will work. If Cd dosen't work stiil, may be there are more scratches on CD. Try to find scratches and use the above technique on Cd or DVD. Remember, This is temporary solution and if CD works, then you should immediately burn a new copy of CD.

  2. Yes amit, i can confirm that this trick really works. I usually try this trick to clean my scratched cds. After cleaning the Cd with toothpaste Rinse the disc thoroughly with warm water and let it dry. You can also use hair gel.

  5. I've been using toothpaste to clean my CD's for quite a few years now, and it works great. The only repairs it can't fix are the ones with huge gashes that go from one side of the CD to another.

Otherwise it's very safe, and very good solution instead of paying $30+ for Disc Doctors.

  6. All of these suggestions are good but another good test is to hold the CD up to light. If light shines through any little scratches or holes, then the foil is scratched - and that missing info is irretrievable. That means you're screwed. If no light shows, then buff away and good luck!

I closed the drive and waitied while it loadded, but to my horror it started making weird wet noises and then toothpaste started shooting out the top of my computer through the fan. I tried to eject it, but it wouldn't come out. I ran downstairs and tripped on my dog but when i got back up with a knife to pry it open my computer was smokin. It fried my harddrive! 35. You can not insert Wet CD in cd drive. So you need to completely dry the CD after cleaning it with toothpaste. Make there is no aliment of moisture in it. I tried it several times and it really works. Those who says it doesn't work, is probably because they don't use it properly. I have just posted a Video instructions with my above post. Use it exactly the way it is used in video and rest assured, your CD will definitely work.

  56. Everyone on here is pretty stupid.
It's obvious this "fix" is not a one size fits all thing and severely scratched discs may still not work.
However, some discs which may have a couple small scratches stopping the disc from working, will most likely benfit from this and they will return to working condition.
    Use your brain PEOPLE!!!

  73. this does work, but it works really well if you clean the disc by applying 90%+ isopropyl alcohol to the disc using a q tip, then dry it. Then you use your tooth paste, I applied radially with a q tip, then rinsed with warm water. It won't fix like knife gashes, but it will definitely help at least a little bit

  77. Works well, if done the right way. DO NOT RUB IN A CIRCULAR MOTION! Rub in a motion that is like the spokes of a tire...from the inside of the disc to the outside, or vice versa. But never rub in a circular motion because it will cause even more damage to the disc.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Its kind of annoying seeing all these people calling this bad advise... it doesn't work for every disk. I use it sometimes on old disks, it works for some, and doesn't work for others. If it doesn't work for you, then stop giving other people shit because of it.

    ReplyDelete
  79. OMG!!!! It worked but not the toothpaste trick because mine was 2 little dots on the foil side.

Here's how I fixed those, like the "foil" way, I didn't have foil so I used 2 very small pieces from my cigarette foil and taped it on with scotch wrap tape. OMG, it loads instantly!!!

Hopefully no balance problems will mess up my ps3 but the tape and the foil were very small. I used scotch wrap tape because it sticks better.

The best thing to do with them is to let kids paint on them or decorate them, or use them for building structures or something. Or take a cryoneedle, for example and you can make some very pretty patterns on a CD. This was, I am sure, good and relevant advice once upon a time.
